State Treasurer Malek Encourages Missourians to Search the State’s Largest Lost & Found in Observance of National Unclaimed Property Day

FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – As National Unclaimed Property
Day approaches on February 1, Missouri State Treasurer Vivek Malek is
encouraging Missourians to check for unclaimed property. “Whether it’s from an uncashed check, unused gift
certificate, or forgotten safe deposit box, many of us end up with unclaimed
property,” said Treasurer Malek. “I want to give people back their money, and
it takes less than 20 seconds to check. So visit ShowMeMoney.com
and come get your money!” The Missouri State Treasurer’s Office currently holds
over $1 billion of unclaimed assets in over 10 million accounts. One in ten
Missourians has Unclaimed Property, and the average return is nearly $300. “Our team works tirelessly to reunite Missourians with
their unclaimed property,” said Lana Massman, Director of Unclaimed Property.
“Their dedication has resulted in yet another record-breaking year of returns
last fiscal year.” Upon taking office, Treasurer Malek made history by
becoming the fastest Treasurer to return over $1 million in unclaimed
property—achieving this milestone within his first three days in office. In
fiscal year 2024, the Treasurer’s Office returned over $56.4 million in
unclaimed property, surpassing the previous record of $55.2 million set in
fiscal year 2023. State law requires financial institutions, insurance
companies, public agencies, and other businesses to transfer unclaimed assets
to the Treasurer’s Office. These assets typically include cash from bank
accounts, stocks, bonds, and safe deposit box contents that have been
abandoned. Additional examples of unclaimed property include uncollected
insurance policy proceeds, government refunds, utility deposits, and wages from
past jobs. To check if you have unclaimed property, visit ShowMeMoney.com
