CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO – The 2023 Unclaimed Property Auction commences today with Missouri State Treasurer Vivek Malek giving opening remarks: “I am proud to be hosting the Unclaimed Property Auction in Cape Girardeau. The auction has been hosted in various cities in the past, and I believe the Southeast Missouri region has earned consideration to host this year.”
The Unclaimed Property Auction features items from safe deposit boxes surrendered as Unclaimed Property. The State Treasurer’s Office works to locate the rightful owners of the contents of safe deposit boxes and return their unclaimed property to them. Once an exhaustive search for the rightful owners has been completed, which generally takes several years, the office holds public auctions to sell to the highest bidder the items of value contained in safe deposit boxes.
“Furthermore, I hope this event will raise awareness about the over one billion dollars of unclaimed property held by my office” said Treasurer Malek, “I encourage residents to visit www.ShowMeMoney.com to check if our office is safeguarding their unclaimed property.”
The Unclaimed Property Auction is open to the public and is being held at the Cape Girardeau Conference Center in the Drury Plaza Hotel. There is an auction preview on the evening of Tuesday, September 26th, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. Bidding will begin each morning at 9:00 am on Wednesday, September 27th and Thursday, September 28th and will last throughout the day until the planned inventories have been auctioned and sold.
