MEDIA ADVISORY: Treasurer Malek to Hold Press Conference on April 11 Regarding Divestment from Foreign Adversaries

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Caty Luebbert, 573-751-5390 JACKSON, Mo. — On Friday, April 11, Missouri State Treasurer Vivek Malek will hold a press conference alongside State Representative Barry Hovis in Jackson, Missouri, to discuss legislative efforts aimed at requiring Missouri’s public pension systems to divest from certain foreign adversaries, including the People’s Republic of China. The event follows Treasurer Malek’s recent op-ed, “Why do some Missouri public pension funds still invest in China?” which outlines both the economic and national security concerns tied to such investments, as well as the rationale behind the decision by the Missouri State Employees Retirement System (MOSERS) in December 2023 to divest from Chinese entities. Event Details: Date: Friday, April 11, 2025 Time: 1:00 p.m. Location: Outside the Cape Girardeau County Courthouse, 100 Court Street Jackson, MO 63755 Media: Open – please contact Kristi Nitsch (573-204-2494) for on-site arrangements. Background: In December 2023, at the recommendation of Treasurer Malek, MOSERS became one of the first public pension systems in the nation to divest from Chinese-based companies. The Treasurer continues to advocate for statewide adoption of similar policies to protect public employees’ retirement funds and align Missouri with growing national concern over investment ties to foreign adversaries.
