PRESS RELEASE
Treasurer Malek recognizes Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: JEFFERSON
CITY, MO – National Developmental Disabilities Awareness
Month begins today, first proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan in 1987. Missouri
State Treasurer Vivek Malek echoes President Reagan’s call to provide people with developmental disabilities “both
encouragement and the opportunities they need to lead productive lives and to
achieve their full potential.” "Developmental Disabilities Month
serves as a reminder to the importance of recognizing and supporting
individuals with disabilities in our community," said Treasurer
Malek. "I hope this month will
bring awareness to many wonderful resources offered across the state of
Missouri, such as the MO ABLE program and the sheltered workshops. We are here
to help Missourians pursue their dreams, so that individuals with disabilities
can thrive and contribute their talents and skills.” MO ABLE accounts provide financial
independence and empowerment for individuals with disabilities by dramatically
increasing the ability to save and invest. Through MOABLE.com,
eligible Missourians with disabilities have the opportunity to open an
investment account and save money without losing eligibility for other
benefits, such as Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Money from MO ABLE accounts may be spent
for qualified expenses, including basic living costs, housing, transportation,
employment training, education, health and wellness, and financial management. On Saturday,
March 16, Treasurer Malek will visit the Special Olympics Missouri “State
Indoor games” to
raise awareness about the program and support the achievements of individuals
with disabilities. Join Treasurer Malek in celebrating Developmental
Disabilities Month and supporting the empowerment of individuals with
disabilities in Missouri! For more information about the MO ABLE program and
its services, please visit moable.com
